Introduction

The change to a communication centered society has taken place. The worker of today is sitting—whether programming, thinking, making phone calls or writing. About 90 to 95 percent of our working time is spent sitting at a desk, even if we stand or walk for a few minutes each hour. This presents an endurance test for the spinal column. A dynamic seating position can prevent health problems. Switching working positions between a forward leaning, upright, and reclined position protects the intervertebral discs and relaxes the muscular system of the neck and the dorsal muscles. A large open angle between the seat and backrest allows optimal relaxation which may even include a short nap. The SKYE chair is the prerequisite.

Ergonomic sitting
  • All static and dynamic components of SKYE support and relieve the body where necessary. The technologically functional unity of seating area, lumbar pad, lumbar shape, and synchro-tilt mechanism minimizes the strain on joints in the knees, pelvis, and spinal column. The head support, neck support, and the armrests, which support the entire pectoral section, prevent tension in the upper body. A generous 42 degree open angle between the seat and the backrest promotes proper breathing, digestion, and thus the sense of well-being, allowing productivity levels to climb.
Intervertebral discs
  • Burdening the intervertebral discs
A static seating position with little movement on a chair that is not adaptive and not properly contoured may result in chronic muscle tension and even in herniated discs, especially in the case of older people.
  • SKYE reduces the burden on the intervertebral discs
Sitting on a SKYE chair lessens strain on the intervertebral discs, maintaining a natural range far below the limits that could lead to health risks. SKYE assures balanced load distribution by means of the head and neck support and the height- and depth-adjustable lumbar pad. The ability to individualize the shape of the lower back rest as well as the reclining force or tension adjustment allows the SKYE chair to preserve the natural double-S shape of the spinal column. An additional plus: With the four-step automatic tension control mechanism, the SKYE chair can quickly and easily be adapted to different users.
  • User Benefits:
    • Avoidance of muscular tension and stress
    • Avoidance of painful straining and compression of the intervertebral discs
    • Improved well-being
The neck region
  • Burdening the muscular system of the head and the neck region
Unintentional hunching of one's shoulders during long-term sitting leads to tensions of the musculature of the rear shoulder and nape of the neck, with pain spreading to the upper arms and the front neck area. Under psychological and mental stress, convulsive tensions are more likely to occur if the weight of the head and neck has to be carried constantly.
  • SKYE reduces the burden on the muscular system of the head and neck region
SKYE's excellent support for the shoulders, as well as for the nape of the neck and the head, prevents tensions of the muscular system.
  • User Benefits:
    • Avoidance of headaches
    • Painless mobility of the upper part of the body
Arms and shoulder area
  • Strain on the arm and shoulder areas
Many people are prone to slumping shoulders when they sit. The consequences: The classic round back, accompanied by muscular tensions and intervertebral disc troubles.
  • SKYE brings relief for the arm and shoulder areas
The multifunctional armrests of the SKYE chair raise the shoulder area and thus stretch the back. This provides relief for the muscular system and the intervertebral discs. The individual adjustability of arm height, width, and rotation allows optimal individualization of the armrests to each user.
  • User benefits:
    • It is easier to stand up
    • Good sitting posture
    • Relief for the osseous and muscular pectoral sections with benefits for the lower back and the muscular system of the neck.
Organs
  • Compression of the organs
Sitting in a sagging position results in reduced breathing capacity, reduced cardiac and circulatory activity, and reduced digestive function. Digestive organs such as the liver, pancreas, and spleen may sustain lasting, pressure-related detrimental effects.
  • SKYE avoids compression of the organs
With upright posture of the upper body, which is supported in all seating positions by the optimal design of the SKYE chair, the internal organs remain uncompressed and are thus better able to function. Dynamic sitting, supported by a superior synchro tilt motion, stimulates all functions of the body and thus promotes the preservation of good health.
  • User Benefits:
    • A generally relaxed muscular system in the chest and abdominal regions
    • Easier and deeper breathing, thus increased oxygen supply
    • Unimpeded return flow of blood back to the heart, thus optimum pumping activity of the heart
    • Stimulation of activity of the digestive organs
Pelvis
  • Strain on the pelvis
The large mass of the abdomen and pelvis has a tendency to tilt back during sitting, dragging the spinal column into and outwardly curved shape, which leads to an overstraining of the intervertebral discs. In addition, severe pressures affect the ischial tuberosities or sitting bones, caused by seating area either lacks cushioning or is too thinly or too softly upholstered. These pressures can partly or completely constrict the blood circulation in the skin. This situation leads to pain in the buttocks.
  • SKYE reduces the burden on the pelvis
The design of the lower back portion of the SKYE chair supports the pelvis in an orthopedically correct manner which ensures that the spinal column and the back maintain a medically desirable posture. The soft cushioning of the seating surface, especially under the ischial tuberosities, guarantees a comfortable and painless sitting experience.
  • User Benefits:
    • Prevention of unhealthy backward tipping of the pelvis
    • Anatomically correct positioning on the ischial tuberosities
    • Avoidance of pain in the buttocks (sciatica)
    • Feeling of comfort when sitting
Legs
  • Strain on the legs
When a person sits, the legs are resting. As a result of this inactivity of the muscles, the venous return flow of the blood to the heart is drastically reduced, especially in the case of a small angle in the hollow of the knee caused by pressure of the chair's seat against the thighs. Varicose veins, edemas of the legs or ankles, and other medical complications are aggravated by an improperly designed chair.
  • SKYE reduces the burden on the legs
Due to the tilted front edge of the seat and the inclination of the seating area, the SKYE chair prevents the development of pressure points that impede the blood flow back to the heart. In addition, the synchro-tilt mechanism with simultaneously lowered front seat edge supports the blood flow in the legs.
  • User Benefits:
    • Prevention of heavy and swollen legs
    • Stimulation of total body blood circulation
    • Relief for the heart
    • Avoidance of varicose veins, edemas of the legs and ankles that are triggered by long term restricted sitting
